Psychotherapy FAQ Evaluation FAQ Media FAQ

Q. What is a psychoeducational evaluation?
A. Psychoeducational evaluations are used to diagnose various learning disabilities, autism, ADD/ADHD, and other conditions that might be affecting a student's performance in the classroom.  These evaluations can also identify students who are eligible for special services like gifted an talented programs, testing modifications, and early intervention.  A full battery typically includes an IQ test, achievement test, visual-motor test, and other psychological measures.

Q. How old are the students you evaluate?
A. We work with students ranging from preschool to graduate school.

Q. How can a psychoeducational evaluation help students preparing for standardized tests
such as the SAT, GRE, and LSAT?

A. Many students who struggle with these important exams blame their low scores on poor test-taking skills.  However, they may be selling themselves short.  These students might be entitled to testing modifications that would greatly enhance their performance.  Modifications include extended test time, a reader, use of a calculator, or private testing room.  An evaluation is required to show evidence that these services are needed.

Q. What if medication is needed?
A. Medication can frequently be avoided with the use of psychotherapy and other behavioral techniques.  However, when we do deem that medication might be necessary, we will refer you to one of the psychiatrists we trust for a medication consultation.

Q. What type of help can you provide after the evaluation is completed?
A. Our services include individual and family psychotherapy, educational counseling, parent training, behavioral interventions, in-home consultations, student advocacy, and career counseling.

Q. Do you treat problems that are not school-related?
A. Absolutely!  We are a full service psychotherapy practice treating a wide range of psychological disorders, including anxiety and depression, and other issues affecting children, adults, and families.
